With the summer now in full swing, parents everywhere need to make sure that they know how to keep their little ones safe during hot weather, as babies and young children can both fall ill when the mercury climbs if parents aren’t careful.
You can keep your nursery nice and cool by keeping the blinds or curtains closed during the day, as well as using a fan to help circulate the air.
Also, think about keeping bed clothes and nightwear to a minimum, and if it’s really hot you can always put them to bed in just a nappy with a single sheet (that’s properly secured so it doesn’t tangle them up in their sleep or cover their face).
If you want to be on the safe side, consider putting a nursery thermometer in the baby’s room so you can keep an eye on the temperature. Anything between 16 degrees and 20 degrees C will be comfortable for your little ones.
Where feeding is concerned, you may find that your child wants to breastfeed more than usual. Remember that if your baby is still being fully breastfeed, they won’t need any water until they’ve moved onto solid food.
Once they are eating solids, offer them little sips of water with meals and offer extra water outside mealtimes just in case. But infant formula or breastmilk should be your child’s main drink during their first year of life.
